The Phyllis Arnold Professional Development Awards are an annual subsidy that will help Canadian
teachers to participate in conferences or professional development courses in geography or social studies.
Phyllis Arnold received the 2001 Geographic Literacy Award from Can Geo Education, and used her award, along with a personal donation, to create the Phyllis Arnold
Endowment Fund. Teachers across Canada can apply for a Phyllis Arnold Professional Development
Award to facilitate their work in the classroom, school, district, and community. Applications are accepted yearly in the spring from any current teacher in an accredited K-12 school within Canada.
Amounts and Deadlines
Each year, Can Geo Education grants up to two awards ($300
in personal subsidies) to assist in the participation of geographic or social studies professional development in the
current calendar year.
Applications must be received by close
of business (5 P.M. ET) May 1st. Awards will be announced by June 1st.
Application Guidelines and How to Apply
Applications must be sent to Can Geo Education, briefly explaining
the professional development opportunity. In order to be eligible for an Arnold award each applicant
must be a member of Can Geo Education . Applications will be given favourable consideration if they
can demonstrate the willingness
to replicate learning in the classroom situation.
Every application must be filled in completely and must be sent to:
Canadian Geographic Education

NOTE : Applications may also be faxed to (613) 744-0947 or emailed to info@ccge.org
Selection Process
Each application will be reviewed by Canadian Geographic Education against the requirements
outlined in these guidelines and for clarity. Can Geo Education will assess applications that
meet initial requirements and make recommendations for funding subsidies. It is expected that final decisions
will be made within four weeks of the application deadline.
Reporting
Acceptance of an Arnold Professional Development Award requires the applicant to pursue
geographic professional development during the application year. Recipients are later required
to submit a very brief summative report (no more than 200 words) detailing
the professional development attended and how they intend to implement the strategies
they will learn into the classroom.
