With everything from lines of longitude to facts about the lithosphere filed away in their heads, top students from across the country competed in Canadian Geographic Education’s 19th annual Great Canadian Geography Challenge national finals, held live online on April 18. Michael Hao, Anzo Nguyen and Spencer Zhao took first, second and third places, respectively, and received the corresponding $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 scholarships. They beat out thousands of other students from all corners of the country. Next up on the geography challenge calendar: the National Geographic World Championship in St. Petersburg, Russia, this July. Visit geochallenge.ca for more info.

“Canadian Geographic magazine is an excellent resource for teachers and students. It provides posters in both official languages, such as the St. Lawrence Seaway map, as well as short geography related news items suitable for current events. In addition, the June issue each year is devoted to environmental issues such as wind energy.”
